The Benefits of a Great Criminal Defense and DUI Attorney

As a former prosecutor and now a successful criminal defense attorney, I’ve handled more cases and logged more time in court than most of the attorneys I’ve met throughout my career. And one thing that has never ceased to amaze me is people who attempt to defend themselves alone when facing criminal charges.

The question I most get asked from new clients is, “What can a criminal defense attorney do for me?” I think if they received the correct answer to this question, far fewer people would end up ruining their lives through criminal charges.

1. A Great Criminal Defense or DUI Attorney Can Keep You Out of Jail

I know it’s a cliche, but I really can keep my clients out of jail when it seems inevitable. This is through a combination of negotiation, planning, conferences, investigation, motion hearings, and trials when necessary. The mark of a great defense attorney is not how many trials have they won, but how many of their clients were they were able to keep out of jail, able to keep their driver licenses when the state wished to take them, and were able to keep their criminal records clean.

2. A Great Criminal Defense or DUI Attorney Can Lower Any Fines

This is one generally not known to the public, but I’ve had cases where I’ve saved my clients as much as $10,000 in fees and fines they would have otherwise paid. In one case, I saved my client over $20,000 in restitution. Considering my fee in that case was only $5000, she received quite the bargain.

The fact of the matter is that people with great attorneys will pay less in fines and fees over time than those that go in alone. In some case, like the one above, my clients actually save money by hiring me.

3. A Great Criminal Defense or DUI Attorney Can Keep Your Record Clean

The Bureau of Criminal Identification is the agency that handles criminal histories in Utah. Their rules and regulations are plentiful and difficult to navigate. Your attorney must be thinking about your record when negotiating a deal on your behalf. What type of deal you receive will determine when you are eligible for an expungement, a cleaning of your record, and when you can really put everything behind you.

4. A Great Criminal Defense or DUI Attorney Should Be Calming and Comforting

I can’t tell you how many clients have called me crying and then after speaking with me for twenty minutes told me how much better they feel. I feel my top priority is to ensure their safety and security and part of that is making sure they have peace of mind. Going through the criminal justice system is terrifying. I have heard of defendants who have developed ulcers, depression, alcoholism and the list goes on and on, all a result of stress from going through the criminal process.

It’s my job to ensure this doesn’t happen. My clients know that I am fighting for them every step of the way and am thinking about their cases even when I’m out of the office. A good guide in this system is invaluable, and I can’t even imagine the stress a person would go through if they tried to handle their charges themselves.

Don’t go it alone when there’s no need to. Hire the best criminal defense attorney you can, and make sure to communicate with them your wants and desires and what you would like to see happen on the case. If they’re not meeting your expectations, find someone else. Remember that you are the customer and your attorney works for you.
